Designer concrete
What is designer or stamped concrete?
Designer concrete is concrete finished to look like something more: stamped with a stone or flagstone pattern, coloured, or poured in curves. Alliance Renovations started in 2008 as a Calgary company that specialized in all kinds of concrete, and still pours stamped patios, walkways and pool decks alongside its garages and basements.
Stamped concrete gives you the look of stone or slate in one continuous surface. It is poured and finished in a single day per section, so the crew has to know the timing of the mix.

Calgary rules
Concrete on City land.
Most backyard concrete is on your own lot. If it touches City property, these rules apply.
Replacing a driveway
No permit is needed to replace an existing driveway. Building a new one or widening it may need a development permit, though "In most cases, a building permit would not be required."
Where a concrete driveway already crosses a utility right-of-way, "a second concrete driveway (sidewalk, patio or walkway) would not be permitted" there.
"It is illegal to excavate, break or reconstruct anything on any portion of a City of Calgary road right-of-way without authorization in writing." That covers sidewalks, crossings, boulevards, curbs and back lanes.
These are the City of Calgary's rules as of October 2026. The City says its pages are a guide, not a legal reading of the bylaws. Most backyard concrete sits on your own lot. The cities, towns and counties around Calgary have their own rules, covered on each area page.
